-->Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
- You connect a Universal Serial Bus (USB) audio device, such as an audio adapter or USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC), to a Windows 10 Version 1703-based computer for the first time.
- The operating system detects the device and loads the standard USB audio 2.0 driver (usbaudio2.sys).
- Windows then downloads the device-specific driver from Windows Update.
- The downloaded device driver replaces the usbaudio2.sys driver.
In this scenario, the device cannot be used, and the computer does not have sound. The speaker icon on the task bar is marked with an X mark. When you select the icon, you receive the following message:
Audio services not responding. Both the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services must be running for audio to work correctly.
Cause
This 'audio not playing' problem occurs because the default USB audio 2.0 driver (usbaudio2.sys) uses the WaveRT port for operation but the device-specific driver does not. However, both drivers use the 'wave' reference string when the device interface is registered.When the device-specific driver replaces the default driver, the device interface that is created by usbaudio2.sys is still used because the reference strings overlap. Therefore, the operating system assumes that the new driver also supports the WaveRT port. Because the new driver does not support the WaveRT port, the system cannot access the driver.
Resolution
To fix this problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1
Uninstall the device. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open Device Manager.
- Select and hold (or double-click) the name of the device, and then select Uninstall.
Note:In step 2, don't select the Delete the driver software for this device check box.
Method 2

Connect the device to a different USB port. The problem may not occur if the device is connected to a different USB port.
Method 3
If the device is not yet connected, install the device-specific driver first. You can do this by using the appropriate installer for the device. Then, connect the device. Windows now selects the device-specific driver instead of the default USB audio 2.0 driver. This method works in this situation because the problem occurs only if the device-specific driver replaces the default driver after the device is connected.

Timewave Navigator Digital Interface
The Navigator interface is not a «new» product, as such. It was originally sold by the late Glenn Wetherell, W3GWW, through his company, US Interface. Recently, however, Timewave acquired the product and re-branded it as the Timewave Navigator. In the Timewave product line, the Navigator is positioned as a «high end» interface for everything from CW to almost any digital mode you can imagine.
Features and Performance
The Navigator features a built-in sound chipset and its design pays strict attention to audio performance. The transmit and receive audio channels (there are two receive channels) are not only fully isolated, they are as quiet as any I’ve encountered in recent memory. This can make a huge difference when you’re trying to copy weak signals. In addition, the audio frequency response was remarkably flat from 300 to at least 3000 Hz with excellent dynamic range characteristics.
The connections to your computer are handled through a single USB 2.0 cable (provided). Your computer treats the Navigator as if it was a second sound card, so your primary sound card is free for other applications such as music, etc. The USB cable also provides dc power, so there is no need to fumble with yet another «wall wart» power supply in your station. The connections to your transceiver are made though a cable that you make yourself, or purchase from Timewave. For this review we purchased a Timewave cable for the rig in question, a Kenwood TS-2000. This is the easiest approach by far, but it adds $55 to the purchase price.
RTTY enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the Navigator supports true FSK. While you can certainly generate an acceptable RTTY transmit signal with audio (AFSK), I prefer straightforward FSK. With FSK I can rest assured that my TS-2000 is putting out a clean RTTY signal without having to worry about how hard the interface is driving the transceiver’s microphone or auxiliary audio input.
The Navigator can also transmit CW by one of two methods. It can key your radio upon commands from whatever CW software you may be using, or you can plug your key directly into the Navigator and take advantage of its built-in KIEL WinKeyer. While both methods worked well for me, the keyer was particularly impressive. The Navigator has a CW speed control on the front panel for use with the keyer and it even includes a side-tone monitor, the volume of which is variable through another front panel knob.
Installation
In terms of physically setting up the Navigator, it is as simple as plugging the USB cable into your computer and the radio cable into your transceiver. Before attaching the Navigator to your computer, however, you have to run the Windows setup software on the CD-ROM that comes with the interface. This allows all the drivers to be installed so that your computer will easily communicate with the unit.
The first time you connect the Navigator USB cable, the computer will automatically configure several «virtual COM ports.» As the instructions state, you must determine the numbers assigned to these ports. For example, the FSK function has its own port, as does the Push To Talk (PTT) and CAT (Computer Aided Transceive). In Windows this is as simple as going into Device Manager and expanding the «Ports» line to see the list. You have to jot down the numbers and their functions so that you can configure your software accordingly. The CD-ROM contains helpful information about the requirements of various types of popular software.

I ran into some trouble at this step because my Windows PC had secretly «reserved» a number of virtual COM ports for USB devices I no longer use. As a result, the Navigator COM ports all ended up being in the range of 16 through 19. Some of my older programs refused to allow COM ports above 8, so I had to do some tricks in Device Manager to find and uninstall the hidden ports. The Navigator itself configures easily; there are no annoying jumpers to set. In fact, if you accept all the defaults, there is nothing to do at all. If you want to change something, however, Timewave provides a small utility program that will allow you to tweak certain items.
On the Air
Once everything was connected and communicating, the Navigator was a pleasure to use. I used it with WriteLog, Ham Radio Deluxe, DigiPan, MMTTY, JT65-HF and more without a hiccup. I especially enjoyed being able to quickly adjust receive and transmit audio from the Navigator’s front panel.
On JT65 in particular, the performance advantage of the Navigator was obvious. Where I had previously been able to decode signals down to -20 dB, with the Navigator I was decoding at -23 and -24 dB.
The Navigator’s features and performance appear to justify its cost.
